Aspiration Pneumonia

Oral bacteria can get into the lungs and cause aspiration pneumonia, a serious lung infection that can cause death.  Symptoms of aspiration pneumonia can include:

• chest pain
• coughing up foul-smelling, discolored green or dark phlegm
  • may contain pus or blood
• shortness of breath
• fever
• wheezing
• fatigue
• excessive sweating

If the individual experiences these symptoms, seek medical attention quickly.
