Infections
Plaque Buildup
Plaque buildup on dentures (yellow arrows), teeth, or fixed bridge plaque can cause:
- Aspiration pneumonia (infection in the lungs). See section Pneumonia for more information.
- Denture stomatitis (infection in the skin of the mouth). See section Denture Stomatitis for more information.
- Gum disease
- Cavities
Aspiration Pneumonia
Oral bacteria can get into the lungs and cause aspiration pneumonia, a serious lung infection that can cause death. Symptoms of aspiration pneumonia can include:
- chest pain
- coughing up foul-smelling, discolored green or dark phlegm
- may contain pus or blood
- shortness of breath
- fever
- wheezing
- fatigue
- excessive sweating
If the individual experiences these symptoms, seek medical attention quickly.
Other Infections
Cavities and gum disease are very common and cause pain and infection that may be difficult to detect.
Oral Care
Improving daily oral hygiene care for those who wear dentures helps prevent oral health problems. For persons doing their own oral hygiene care, assistance can be helpful by providing visual inspections or cleaning as needed.
