Materials
Preparation

Prepare all the materials needed for the person before starting oral hygiene care:
- Gloves
- Toothbrush (use only a pea size)
- Fluoride toothpaste
- Small paper cups for rinsing and spitting
- Tongue depressors
- Gauze
- Prescription rinses (if any)
Toothbrush Replacement

Replace a regular or denture toothbrush:
- Every 3 months
- After the person has been ill
- Frayed Bristles
Toothpaste Quality

Toothpaste should contain fluoride and have an American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Approval
- A pea-sized portion is adequate to clean entire mouth
- Toothpaste provides fluoride and freshens breath
Products to Use Between Teeth

Products to use between teeth include:
- Dental floss
- Floss holders
- Floss threaders
- Proxabrushes
- End-tuft brushes
Choose a device that works best for the person and use at least once daily before bedtime. Make sure any dislodged food is rinsed out.
Infection Control

To control infections:
- Set out all materials needed before touching the person
- Use proper hand hygiene and remember to wear gloves during these steps
- After touching the person’s mouth, all items touched need to be discarded or properly disinfected
Maintenance and Storage

Maintaining and Storing Tools:
- Tools and supplies used must be specifically labeled and used only for and by that individual
- Keep the tools clean
- Store items in a personalized, well-ventilated container separate from other personal items
