Support and assist the person as needed while maintaining respect and encouraging their independence.

Express gratitude when the person engages with the care being provided.

Prevent accidents by creating a safe environment by:

• Securing brakes on the bed or wheelchair
• Keeping care tools out of reach of the person

Brush the teeth with the person elevated in bed or sitting up in a wheelchair.

Create a positive atmosphere to gain cooperation (e.g., play soft music). Ask how you can make their experience more comfortable.

Use eye contact and explain the procedure for the person you are helping.

Choose a time of day when the person is not busy with activities or watching their favorite TV program. This tip is especially important!
